Liner Notes

Although Generative music has been called "mechanical" or "technological", in fact, the process can be quite organic, and depends on the rules and guidelines established by the musician. I often wonder if nature is the same-- some protean intellect set forth these forces, reactions, rules-- and over millions of years, they generated complexity-- eventually, consciousness, humankind. If so, could we further imagine that we are able, as people, to cause our own evolution, as we build synapses in our own minds, with some intention, and affect the world around us? Are we not the first self-evolving beings, at least on Earth? A lot of people say, "It's just evolution", to answer questions about the emergence of life. I think that just brushes the gates of a great garden of mystery. But what really is evolution-- how could all living creatures on a planet be moved similarly to evolve, and how can we explain the richness and greatness of the process-- how to celebrate its power?

The tracks on this album are early examples of a new generative process, through which I moved away from strict loops and brached out into series of phrases, with similar beat structures and variable sounds on top. I felt that strict repetition was growing fetishistic, and wanted to try to evolve beyond it.
